Landmark

White House Partnership
Project Overview
As part of a White House innovation hackathon (at the actual White House), Colab developed Landmark, a technology solution designed to help foster youth locate critical resources such as shelters, food pantries, and foster care networks, even when they lacked access to WiFi.
Colab's Contribution
After extensive user research, Colab identified a key barrier for foster youth: most only had intermittent access to the internet, relying on free WiFi at coffee shops or public spaces. In response, Colab designed a solution that preloaded GPS data and allowed users to navigate to essential resources using physical city landmarks rather than traditional digital maps.
Journey & Impact
The innovation behind Landmark addressed an often-overlooked issue: accessibility. Most foster care systems focus on connecting youth with resources but assume they always have access to mobile data or WiFi. Landmark challenged this assumption and provided a practical solution that worked within the real constraints of its users. By utilizing city landmarks as navigational tools, the platform ensured that foster youth could find their way even without an internet connection. Recognized by the Obama Administration, Landmark became a model for how government-backed social innovation projects can be approached with a user-first mindset. The project demonstrated Colab’s ability to conduct rapid, empathetic design research, create a functional prototype under tight constraints, and deliver an impactful, scalable solution.
