Gum.bo

Corporate Innovation to Acquisition
Project Overview
In collaboration with MediaTemple, Colab developed Gum.bo, a SaaS platform designed to help entrepreneurs find brandable and available domain names.
Colab's Contribution
MediaTemple was hosting millions of websites but was only selling tens of thousands of domain names, highlighting a gap in their business model. Colab addressed this issue by creating an intuitive search tool that leveraged the Merriam-Webster API to generate synonyms and alternative spellings for desired domain names while also checking for social media availability to ensure cross-platform branding consistency.
Journey & Impact
This innovative approach transformed MediaTemple’s domain name business, significantly increasing sales and integrating seamlessly into their web hosting funnel. Prior to Gum.bo, many potential domain buyers struggled to find creative yet available domain names that also had aligned social media handles. The platform removed this friction, making it easier for entrepreneurs and businesses to secure their brand identity in one seamless process. The success of Gum.bo ultimately led to its acquisition by MediaTemple, which leveraged the technology to strengthen its position before being acquired by GoDaddy. The entire lifecycle of Gum.bo, from ideation to acquisition, illustrates Colab’s strength in building scalable SaaS solutions that create real business value. It also underscores Colab’s ability to develop digital products that not only serve immediate user needs but also align with larger corporate growth strategies.
